Following our series of emails on machine safety and the new Machinery Directive which came into force on 29th December 2009, we would like to bring your attention to a RA White Paper (ref. EMEA 2077 – 08 January 2010) which has just been published.  This has been updated to reflect the latest changes concerning the Machinery Directive and Ecodesign Directive, as well as the new number for the Use of Work Equipment Directive.  Click here to view.

This document identifies the key European Directives that apply to industrial automation equipment, together with a summary of the scope of each directive.  For each directive links are provided to the official EU web sites that provide:
 

• The text of the Directive together with the official Guidelines
• A list of harmonised European Standards that confer a presumption of conformity with the essential requirements
• Other relevant information.

Links are also provided to RA product certification web sites that contain RA EC Declarations of Conformity, safety certificates, Ex certificates, etc. – this type of information is very useful for OEMs and SIs.

This document is aimed at OEMs and SIs who are exporting machines/equipment to Europe, but have little knowledge or understanding of which directives might apply.  In essence, the document is saying “These are some of the directives/regulations you need to consider”.  It does not go into the details of how to design equipment to meet the directives but instead refers the reader to the relevant European Commission web sites.
